1. Define the conversion before choosing the platform
An impression, click, lead, qualified enquiry and customer are different outcomes. Choose the action your campaign can reliably measure and that matters to the business. Google’s conversion-goal guidance explains how goals guide optimisation. If the form event fires without a saved enquiry, fix it before buying more traffic. Otherwise the campaign may optimise toward a reassuring but false signal.
2. Separate management fees from media spend
Your operating budget includes more than the amount paid to the ad platform. Allow for management, creative, landing pages and any necessary software. Work backwards from an affordable acquisition cost using your own margins and sales process. Use scenarios, not an invented promise. For example, if a business can afford CAD $200 to acquire a customer and one in five qualified leads becomes a customer, the implied qualified-lead allowance is CAD $40 before other acquisition costs. This is illustrative arithmetic, not a benchmark.
3. Match the channel to the buying situation
Search ads can reach people expressing a specific need. Social ads can demonstrate an unfamiliar solution to a relevant audience. Neither is automatically best for every business. Choose one focused test when the budget is small. A local urgent service and a new productivity app may require very different messages, timing and destinations even when both want more customers.
4. Make the landing page continue the ad
If an ad promises a scheduling demonstration, open with that task. Show what the product does, who it fits, the relevant limits and the next action. Avoid sending every campaign to a broad homepage. A local service page should explain the service area and enquiry process. Check the page on mobile, test the form destination and make sure the sales team knows what was promised.
5. Follow a SaaS example beyond the trial
Imagine a scheduling app for small clinic teams. The ad demonstrates fewer back-and-forth booking messages; the page shows that workflow and invites a trial. Measure the trial, then the first useful setup step and paid upgrades when reliable data is available. If trials rise but activation does not, investigate onboarding before raising spend. A relevant creator could demonstrate the workflow too, but creator fees, disclosure and ad usage rights need a separate plan.
6. Change one important thing at a time
Keep a test log with the audience, promise, creative, destination, dates, spend and outcome. Review quality as well as volume. Search terms, audience feedback and sales notes may reveal that the wrong people are responding. Avoid judging a test before the normal conversion cycle has passed or treating tiny samples as certainty. Pause or repair a broken journey before scaling it.
Check the destination before scaling the budget
Paid advertising management includes choices about audience, creative, destination, measurement and spend. A campaign can generate clicks while the landing page or follow-up loses the opportunities. Check the full route before treating budget as the only lever.
Google Ads’ landing-page guidance includes relevance, usefulness and expectations created by the ad. Translate that into a practical review: does the page continue the promise, explain the conditions and make the next action work on a phone?
Define what would justify another investment. That could include enough suitable enquiries to evaluate cost and quality, a working sales handoff and capacity to serve new customers. A cheap click alone does not answer those questions. Keep tests small enough to learn from without promising a universal test budget or guaranteed return.
